It depends on the route. The direct road via Nakatsu reaches the Ao-no-Domon area in about 60 minutes, and it's roughly the same from Yufuin. The inland scenic approach past Hitome Hakkei toward the cycling terminal takes around 90 minutes. Check which route your day actually follows before assuming the shorter figure.

A cycling day is a full day: three hours on the road plus a 40-kilometer out-and-back ride, flat enough that anyone reasonably active manages it. Adding Sarutobi Sentsubo Gorge upstream also makes it a full day, by car.

Can you visit Yabakei Gorge without a car?

Not comfortably. You can reach Ao-no-Domon by limited express to Nakatsu (around 37 minutes) plus a bus of about 30 minutes, but that bus runs only about once an hour. Combining Ao-no-Domon, Yabakei Bridge, and Furu-Rakan in one day without a car or bicycle isn't practical, and Sarutobi Sentsubo Gorge has no public transport at all.

Rarely, and only as a custom arrangement. A few lines have run one — Princess Cruises and Viking Ocean among them, and Princess quotes an 80-minute scenic drive, consistent with the longer route — but Yabakei isn't a standard Beppu excursion and most ships' lists don't include it. One Cruise Critic poster asked the right question about a Viking excursion: whether an hour-plus each way leaves time to walk around. Honestly, on a short call it doesn't; it works as a custom full-day trip, not as a quick stop.

What is Ao-no-Domon, and why is it famous?

It's a passage cut along the cliff base beside the Yamakuni River, opened in 1763, running 342 meters in total with 144 meters of that as tunnel. A monk named Zenkai is said to have excavated it over some thirty years with hand tools, after travelers had died on the exposed ledge path it replaced. It's free to walk through, with no gate or closing time.

Is Sarutobi Sentsubo Gorge like Takachiho Gorge?

Not in form. Takachiho is columnar-jointed cliffs viewed from a rowboat, looking up; Sarutobi is a riverbed drilled with thousands of natural potholes, viewed from a suspension bridge, looking down. What they share is a national Natural Monument designation and genuine scenic quality — with the difference that Takachiho draws crowds and Sarutobi, on most days, doesn't. Allow about half an hour for the walk.

Spring through early summer, and autumn. Fall color peaks in the last week of November, with late November into early December offering good color and lighter crowds; spring brings blossom and, later, flooded rice paddies below the rock formations. Midsummer is increasingly hot and we don't recommend it, especially on a bike, while winter is chilly and bare rather than dangerous.
