Further out, the bamboo crafts center, the towers, and the lakes have nothing to do with hot water whatsoever.

How do you get from Beppu Port into the city, and do you need buses or a taxi?

Taxis wait at the pier, so the simplest answer is to take one — you don't need to ride a shuttle to JR Beppu Station first, and the Hells are about fifteen minutes away by road. Most cruise lines also run a complimentary shuttle to the station, though whether one operates and how often varies by ship, so confirm at your shore excursion desk. Local buses are fine once you're inside Kannawa, where everything is walkable anyway, but between districts they can be infrequent and route information isn't always consistent. Uber dispatches taxis in Beppu and the GO app covers Oita Prefecture, and both quote a fare before you ride.

With an all-aboard around 3 p.m. that works only if the morning has kept moving — two Hells rather than three, and no lingering over lunch. With a later departure it's comfortable. By bus, with connections and a walk at either end, it's the first thing that falls out of the day.
