Your personal guide will meet you at JR Kumamoto Station or your hotel. After a friendly introduction, we begin the day the local way — by purchasing a one-day tram pass and stepping onto one of Kumamoto’s beloved retro streetcars. In about 15 minutes, we arrive at the foot of Kumamoto Castle.
We spend our morning exploring Kumamoto Castle, one of Japan’s three great castles. Your guide walks you through the mighty musha-gaeshi stone walls — a defensive curve so steep it was said to send warriors tumbling back — and up to the reconstructed main keep. Along the way, we hear one of modern Japan’s most moving stories: how the castle was devastated by the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, and how, stone by stone, the city has been bringing it back to life.
Just below the castle, we step into Sakura no Baba Johsaien, a lively castle-town lane of food stalls and craft shops. Instead of a heavy sit-down lunch, we graze — a small taste of one Kumamoto specialty, then another, then another. Three iconic local flavors, each with its own story, eaten hot on the go.
From Johsaien, we stroll along Nishi-Ginza Street into Shimotori, one of the largest covered shopping arcades in western Japan. Your guide points out local shops and the small everyday sights most visitors walk past, as we make our way through the everyday pulse of the city to Toricho-suji tram stop.
We board the streetcar once more, rattling gently through the city toward the quieter, greener side of Kumamoto.
Our final stop is Suizenji Jojuen, an elegant strolling garden built in the 17th century by the ruling Hosokawa clan. Its ponds are fed by pure spring water from Mt. Aso far to the east, and its miniature landscapes are said to represent the 53 stations of the old Tokaido road. Within the garden stands Kokindenju-no-Ma, a historic pavilion originally located in Kyoto and brought here in the early 1900s — a quiet, storied space once used for the secret transmission of teachings on Japan’s oldest imperial poetry anthology. Here we settle in for a bowl of freshly whisked matcha green tea and a traditional sweet, looking out over the garden and its ponds. A peaceful, poetic close to a day in Kumamoto.
Our day together comes to a close as we drop you off at your hotel or another preferred spot in Kumamoto.
