Tucked deep in the green mountains of Oita, the tiny village of Onta has shaped its pottery the same way for more than 300 years — to the rhythmic echo of river-powered wooden mallets. Together we’ll step into one of Japan’s most authentic artisan communities, where nine families still work clay and water entirely by hand, with no modern machinery at all.
Unlike a typical sightseeing stop, this small-group journey is built around immersion. We go beyond the tourist trail and into heritage grounds, communal kilns, and quiet workshop corners that few outsiders ever reach — guided by a host who lives and breathes this craft.

Recognized as a National Important Intangible Cultural Property, Onta ware (Onta-yaki) is a living, 300-year-old heritage. This remote Oita valley so moved the British potter Bernard Leach that he praised it as a high point of the Mingei (folk art) movement. To this day, nine families carry the tradition forward using only river-powered wooden mallets and raw local earth — turning everyday clay into pieces of quiet, timeless beauty.

We meet at our pick-up point in Hita and, after a warm welcome and introductions, set off together. Along the way, your guide shares the story of the region and its place in Japan’s Mingei (folk art) movement.
We arrive at a striking thatched-roof gallery built in 1861. Settle in with a cup of premium local tea while your host opens up the traditions and quiet aesthetics that have protected Onta ware for three centuries.
We travel deeper into the mountains by private vehicle to the secluded hamlet of Onta, where the valley hums with the rhythmic echo of water-powered clay mallets. With your host, you’ll step behind the scenes into private heritage grounds, communal kilns, and — conditions permitting — historic workshop areas usually closed to visitors.
Your host bids you farewell as your guide walks you to a welcoming local eatery. Savor hand-rolled buckwheat soba served on authentic Onta ware — a quiet moment to reflect and ask any last questions.
We return to JR Hita Station in good time for your onward train, carrying memories of a hidden corner of Kyushu that few travelers ever reach.
Onta Pottery Village-I feel extremely lucky to have found Keita. His knowledge of Hita and the surrounding area is phenomenal. My husband and I experienced a truly personal tour of this special village. The potters are considered a part of Japan’s Important National Intangible Cultural Property. Keita also arranged to have an artist accompany us for this tour as he was very familiar with the village and its residents. My father visited this same village over 20 years ago and I was able to meet one of the same potters that my father met over 20 years ago and son of another potter.
