Tour Details

Journey into Yamaga, a historic merchant town where time is measured by the delicate folding of paper and the warm glow of lanterns. Starting from Kumamoto, this private tour explores the soulful craftsmanship of “Yamaga Toro”—a Nationally Designated Traditional Craft made entirely of Japanese paper and glue, without a single nail.

We begin at the sacred Omiya Shrine and the Yamaga Lantern Folk Crafts Museum to witness these impossible architectural masterpieces. You will wander the atmospheric Buzen Kaido road, visiting the grand Yachiyo-za Theater and the nostalgic Sakura-yu bathhouse. The day concludes with a visit to a modern Lantern Craft Studio and a beloved local Sembei shop, immersing you in the stories and flavors of the people who call Yamaga home.

  • Spiritual Roots: Discover the ancient legends of the Yamaga Lantern Festival at Omiya Shrine.
  • Nationally Designated Craftsmanship: Marvel at intricate paper lanterns, a prestigious Japanese traditional craft, at the Folk Crafts Museum.
  • Local Flavors: Meet the owners of a storied rice cracker shop and taste their freshly baked Sembei.
