Setting out from Kumamoto City, together we’ll explore the soulful craft of “Yamaga Toro” — a Nationally Designated Traditional Craft made entirely of Japanese paper and a little glue, without a single nail.
We’ll begin at the sacred Omiya Shrine and the Yamaga Lantern Folk Crafts Museum, marveling at these seemingly impossible paper masterpieces. Then we’ll wander the atmospheric Buzen Kaido, the town’s old merchant road, visiting the grand Yachiyo-za Theater and the nostalgic Sakura-yu bathhouse. The day winds down at a working lantern studio and a beloved local sembei shop, immersing us in the stories — and flavors — of the people who call Yamaga home. More than sightseeing, it’s a chance to connect with the living craft and gentle rhythm of small-town Kyushu.

We’ll meet you at JR Kumamoto Station or your preferred pickup point (hotel, station, etc.), then set off together for the charming town of Yamaga. Arriving by cruise? We can also pick you up at Yatsushiro Port — just ask when you book.
We’ll begin at Omiya Shrine, the spiritual heart of the town’s famous lantern festival, then visit the Yamaga Lantern Folk Crafts Museum, housed in a beautiful 1920s former bank. Here you’ll see Yamaga Toro up close — extraordinary hollow models of castles and shrines, held together by tiny paper joints, a mastery found nowhere else in the world.
Next we’ll stroll the Buzen Kaido, a beautifully preserved Edo-period road. We’ll visit Sakura-yu, one of Japan’s largest wooden communal bathhouses, famous for its majestic ceiling, and nearby Yachiyo-za, a stunning kabuki theater from 1910. Depending on the day, we may hear stories of the theater’s revival while taking in its ornate revolving stage and vibrant hand-painted ceiling advertisements.
We’ll take a relaxed break for lunch, and we’ll happily point you toward the best local spots to suit your taste. (Please note: the cost of the meal is not included.)
In the afternoon we’ll visit a lantern craft studio, where these ancient paper techniques are evolving into contemporary design. The master artisans are often deep in focused work, but stepping into their creative space lets you feel the quiet dedication behind the craft. Alternatively, we’ll stop at a traditional sembei (rice cracker) shop in the merchant quarter — meeting the welcoming shopkeepers and enjoying the simple, nostalgic crunch of crackers baked from recipes passed down for generations. (These visits depend on availability.)
Our day together comes to a close as we drop you off at your hotel or another preferred spot in Kumamoto.
